REFRESHING BURUNDI'S PROSPECTS THROUGH WATER ACCESS
In Burundi, nearly one-in-10 children die before reaching their fifth birthday, with 13% of under-5 deaths caused by diarrhea. Most rural communities are characterized by poor hygiene practices, with poorly constructed latrines, open defecation and poor personal hygiene; approximately one third of the population does not have access to clean water.
In April 2018, I travelled to Burundi to work with World Vision, who have been delivering clean water to rural communities and improving hygiene practices through innovative behaviour-change initiatives and water-supply projects. I produced a series of human interest stories and a short booklet demonstrating the impact of World Vision Burundi’s work to help raise additional funding for the programme.
VOICES FROM THE LAND:
RESTORING SOILS & ENRICHING LIVES
A quarter of our land is already degraded and almost half the global population are directly affected by land degradation. The continued wellbeing of both people and planet relies on our ability to protect, manage and restore our land more quickly than we degrade it.
In 2019 I worked with the UN Environment Programme, collecting first-hand testimonies from Ecuador, Jordan, Kenya, Madagascar, Vietnam and Jordan to show how local and global collaboration can achieve land degradation neutrality.
The final publication and accompanying exhibition was launched by UNEP’s Director Inger Anderson at the 14th Conference of Parties (COP) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. EMERGENCY RESPONSE TO TYPHOON DAMREY
Typhoon Damrey hit in South Central Vietnam in early November 2017, leaving 107 people dead and a trail of destruction. In response, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) mobilized immediate support for a 45-day emergency response project, delivering supplies to vulnerable households affected.
I helped CRS showcase their relief-work by creating profiles of three families who had received emergency assistance.
